Creating a More Inclusive Society in Nashville, Tennessee

The Tennessee Respite Coalition is a non-profit organization that provides respite care for caregivers who need a break from the ongoing care they provide for a loved one. Nashville, the capital of Tennessee and the largest city in the state, has numerous non-profit organizations and community groups dedicated to various causes, from education and environmental advocacy to social justice and healthcare. Over the years, Nashville has played an important role in shaping the political landscape of Tennessee and the United States. Nashville has made great strides in promoting inclusion through initiatives such as protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ people, supporting minority-owned businesses, and investing in programs that address systemic racism and discrimination.

The need in Central Tennessee is immense and Mother To Mother distributes essential supplies for infants and toddlers. CJI offers criminal defense representation through court appointments to people in Nashville seeking its services and provides civil, legal and social services to clients who need and want them. More than 40 professionals from businesses, non-profit organizations and academics collaborated with Nashville-Davidson officials to develop the Livable Nashville plan, which seeks to reduce the threats of climate change for Nashville residents. This plan includes economic equity and inclusion as fundamental components of its vision, with Mayor Barry and local stakeholders working to improve quality of life and reduce climate and economic shocks for everyone living in Nashville-Davidson and across the state of Tennessee.

Residents who are passionate about the political issues facing Nashville can actively participate in local politics by attending community meetings, volunteering with local organizations, running for public office, and supporting candidates who align with their values. After working with OSD for several months, I am still discovering new ways to care for and donate to the homeless veteran community in Central Tennessee. To address social issues and inequalities in Nashville, the city government has implemented several strategies such as establishing trust funds for affordable housing, encouraging developers to include affordable units in their projects, and exploring innovative housing solutions such as small homes and cooperative housing models. These initiatives are helping to create a more equitable society where everyone can have access to basic needs.

Nashville is a vibrant city that is constantly evolving. With its commitment to social justice, it is making progress towards creating a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive. Through its various initiatives, non-profit organizations, community groups, and local government policies, Nashville is tackling social issues and inequalities head on.
